Structural Analysis and Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings Using SAP 2000 and Nepal National Building Code
Nepal is located at the boundary between Indian and Tibetan tectonic plates and therefore lies in a seismically active region. The collapse of engineered and non-engineered building during earthquakes is the main contributor to the loss of lives, injuries to the people and economic losses. In Nepal, almost 80 percent of the total building is being built without proper structural safety considerations. In this context, effective enforcement building codes and control system could be the major steps to reduce the loss of life and properties.
Building codes generally do not specify good practice, but simply a level of resistance to forces to be attained based on the best known data. Despite the tragic loss of life and property caused by the earthquake, it provided an opportunity to learn how to be better prepared for larger earthquakes and how to mitigate the damaging effects of future earthquakes. The National building code was established in Nepal in 1994 and was enacted in 2003. But the implementation is limited to a few municipalities only. This is because of the lack of public awareness, lack of institutional mechanism for implementation and insufficient capacity of implementing authorities. In this regards, to fulfill these gaps different training programs for different level of technician are being held by UNDP/ERRRP project.
The ERRRP Project for Nepal is designed to strengthen the institutional and community level capacity to plan and implement earthquake risk reduction strategies and disaster recovery preparedness. Accordingly, with the joint effort of ERRRP and Pokhara Sub Metropolitan city had organised the seven days training program on "Structural Analysis and Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings using SAP 2000 and Nepal National Building Code" for Municipal engineers in Pokhara from July 27, 2008 to August 2, 2008. The main objective of this training program is to build the capacity of the municipal engineers for the effective implementation of National Building Code focusing on the structural analysis and earthquake resistant design of buildings.
